United Passengers Earn Extra Rewards
As the winds continue to shift in the world of airline loyalty programs, United is offering a temporary boost to the rewards its premium-cabin travelers earn.
United Continental Holdings Inc. will be awarding its United MileagePlus members as many as 12,000 bonus award miles per flight segment when they buy premium fares on long-haul flights, on top of their normal base award miles and other normal bonuses.
The accelerated rewards plan will run through Feb. 28. It follows a similar move by American Airlines Group Inc. last month. It also comes during a time of change in the industry. Delta Air Lines Inc., for example, switched Jan. 1 to a dollars-spent rewards model from a miles-traveled model, and United will follow suit March 1.
As for United’s temporary rewards acceleration, the biggest bonuses will go to United Premier 1K MileagePlus members, with those of lower status or flying fewer than 3,000 miles earning fewer bonus rewards. The bonuses are offered on premium-cabin tickets purchased for United or United Express flights, along with United-marketed flights by partner carriers.
